Lots of members came out for the race and the fish fry. A reporter from the Beacon Herald was also there for the start of the race. Exerpt from the Beacon Herald: Members of the Wildwood Sailing Club competed in the annual Rum Runners Race dressed as pirates on Saturday. Nicole Schmidt
Staff Reporter Sails were out and swords were up as members of the Wildwood Sailing Club hopped aboard their boats this weekend to take part in the annual Rum Runners Race. This year marked the 9th pirate-themed race, but for the first time costumes were incorporated into the competition. Despite the sun, the sailors were dressed in tall boots, floppy hats, wigs and bandanas. The racecourse was set up around Wildwood Lake where eight boats made their way to the starting line to complete the one-hour loop. Race committee chair Les Leonhardt said that with the wind that day, there was only one thing the competitors could do in preparation -- pray. Rob Johnson and his son Wes were the winners of this year's race, making it their fourth Rum Runner victory. Johnson has been sailing for nearly forty years. Dave McDonald came in second place two minutes behind the Johnsons. In keeping with the theme of the event winners were awarded a bottle of rum. Pirate-themed Fish Fry Once again Christina Dillow outdid herself in organizing the Fish Fry dinner, and thanks to Gerry for the fries. Was great to see so many members dressed up. Check out the club's photobucket for more photos. This year's breakfast was very well-attended. 54 people came out to enjoy the marvelous weather and food.
