To All WSC Members, I would like to make the membership of the sailing club aware of the upcoming shut down on September 18, 2021. It is expected that everyone makes a point to be there. Work start time is 10a.m.(The dates were given at the beginning of the year.) Since participation in maintenance of the docks was minimal, the following is suggested: On the day of the shut down all slips are to be lifted and repaired by the respective users before securement to the walkway. If it does not get done, you will have to live with the consequences. Once these have been done, the walkways are sectioned off and parked on the west shore. It is possible that we have to make this shutdown a two day affair. Tools for the repair are a battery operated drill with a robertson number 2 bit, 3/4 open end wrench and socket. It is recommended that you bring your own nourishment and refreshment for the day. See YOU then. Hans J. Rosch, Dock Manager P.S. All boats must be removed from the docks by 7p.m. sundown on Friday, September 17th. Ahoy Sailors All, We have received another update on the exceptionally low water level at Wildwood Reservoir. The anticipated continuing low water could impact larger sailboats and all boats with fixed keels and deeper draughts. The Wildwood Conservation Area advisory citing possible impacts on boating can be viewed at www.wildwoodconservationarea.ca. I have been in touch with Conservation Area Superintendent Paul Switzer querying whether CA contingency measures might affect Wildwood Sailing Club. His June 18 --response follows. "I'm not anticipating a complete boating ban, however the reservoir levels in late summer will most likely require members to remove their boats from the water much earlier than normal. I would anticipate the use of the launch ramp and docks at the club by late summer to be an issue. Current projections show that by September water levels will be slightly above winter levels. I would encourage members to closely monitor water levels. Flows for downstream augmentation are being increased. The low levels will start to become more visible in the near future, although the rain we've received does appear to be buying us some time." That said, I encourage sailors who haven't yet launched their boat to make the best of the season and launch now. Thanks to the recent dock assembly work led by Hans Rosch, Les Leonhardt, Peter Cochrane and Don Van Galen -- and of course to all who assisted in the job -- close to a dozen boats are already docked and there's docking space for about 20 more. Additional docks can be added as needed. It should be noted as well that if launching your boat becomes ill-advised as Wildwood's expected early "low tide" actually occurs, club members who do not launch have the option of obtaining refunds for UTRCA fees. Application, however, must be made to club Treasurer Les Leonhardt before the end of July. Let's stay optimistic. More rainfall like we've had just recently could change everything. Happy Sailing, Donal O'Connor WSC Commodore Ahoy All, FYI. This attachment received today from Wildwood Conservation Area regarding reservoir level and possible impacts for boaters. Donal O'Connor WSC Commodore Donal Please see attached newsletter and share with your fellow members. The document isn't specific to the club so some of the info isn't relevant, but there is still valuable information in it. Additional information will be available in the coming weeks as we monitor levels and are able to make clearer decisions on the impacts. Also, staff installed a game camera at the sailing club gate yesterday. We will monitor this camera and pass on any information of value. Regards Paul Switzer Superintendent Wildwood Conservation Area Ahoy All,
We have been informed by Wildwood Conservation Area that the waterway will now be opened to motorized watercraft starting Tuesday, May 25. That firm opening date triggers sailing club preparations for launching and docking boats. The process will most likely be gradual, much like last year, with a small select crew first installing the launch jetty and another installing at least a section of our overall docks to which we can later attach additional docking. That approach is shared by Docks Director Hans Rosch and Les Leonhardt who will coordinate the work. As with last year, we will still be subject to cautionary limits on work crew numbers so we do not anticipate a customary call-up of all members for a docks installation and clean-up day. Hans will schedule assembly work and organize crews as needed. On the clean-up front, our Grounds Director Phil Christie has already been attending to grass cutting, and of course any member who can handle a rake is welcome to clear debris off of a path or the vehicle parking area or to clean a chair or two on the patio. Here's looking to a fun sailing season at Wildwood! Donal O'Connor WSC Commodore |
